Washington National Parks

Washington national parks cultural sites provide a glimpse into the history and culture of the northwest, the starting point for those with gold in their eyes, and evidence that man can solve their problems peacefully. Visitors can find natural wonders among the recreational lakes, active volcanoes, ruggedly beautiful mountains, temperate rainforests, and wild coastline.

Visit These Washington National Parks:

Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve: Within the fast growing Puget Sound region, Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve provides a vivid historical record where Pacific Northwest history is still clearly visible in the landscape. Historical features of the reserve appear to today's visitors much as they did a century ago, when New England sea captains were drawn to Penn Cove.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site: Nestled snugly today in the Vancouver/Portland metropolitan area and enveloped by its highway, rail, air, and maritime commercial networks, Fort Vancouver is a gem of a park whose story as an economic and cultural center - told, in part, through engaging programs and a world-class archaeology collection - fascinatingly portends that of the modern-day Pacific Northwest.

Klondike Gold Rush - Seattle Unit National Historical Park: Gold! read the headlines in July of 1897. After years of struggling through a depression, the people of the nation were intrigued by the possibility of riches. Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park preserves the story of the 1897-98 stampede to the Yukon gold fields and Seattle's role in this event. The park offers a glimpse at the stories of adventure and hardship of the gold rush.

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area: For thousands of years the Columbia River flowed wild and free. The untamed waters made their way to the Pacific – changing channels, skirting glaciers, suddenly flooding – controlled only by what nature dictated.

Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail: Between May 1804 and September 1806, 32 men, one woman, and a baby traveled from the plains of the Midwest to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery. In their search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean, they opened a window onto the west for the young United States.

Mount Rainier National Park: Learn about glaciers. Discover life in a rainforest. Hike the Wonderland Trail. Explore subalpine ecology. Watch clouds shroud the mountain and disappear. Visit a rustic historic building. Dream about climbing to the summit. Study geology. Experience a mountain meadow. Listen to a glacier crack. Observe the wildlife...and wonder! BE INSPIRED! Take a look at Paradise under the winter snows!

Nez Perce National Historical Park: Since time immemorial, the Nimiipuu or Nez Perce have lived among the rivers, canyons and prairies of the inland northwest. Join us in exploring the park's thirty-eight sites and experiencing the story of a people who are still part of this landscape.

North Cascades National Park: Jagged peaks, deep valleys, cascading waterfalls and over 300 glaciers adorn the North Cascades National Park Service Complex. San Juan Island National Historical Park: San Juan Island in the summer of 1859 was an international tinderbox as military forces of Great Britain and the United States stood face to face in a confrontation that could at any moment plunge both nations into war. The cause of the crisis – the death of a pig!

Whitman Mission National Historic Site: Stirred by accounts of explorers and traders, missionaries had become interested in the Oregon country in the 1820s, but the remoteness of the area discouraged them. In 1833, an article in the New York Methodist publication described the visit to St. Louis of some western Indians seeking teachers and the white man’s "Book of Heaven" – the Bible. Although it was mostly fictional, the story stimulated missionary interest in work among the Native Americans in the Oregon country.
