Going to Grand Canyon’s South Rim?

The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is 85 – 90 miles northwest of Flagstaff, Arizona and approximately 60 miles north of Williams, Arizona. Use the following directions and suggestions to make the most of your visit to this spectacular national icon.

Grand Canyon South Rim mapDriving from Flagstaff:

• Take I-40 west for approximately 30 miles to Highway 64 (Exit 165, just east of Williams). Head north on Highway 64 directly to the South Rim (approximately 60 miles) OR

Travel north on Humphreys Street to Columbus Avenue, turn left. Columbus Avenue becomes Highway 180. Take Highway 180 west to Highway 64 (approximately 55 miles), turn right (north). Head north on Highway 64 directly to the South Rim (approximately 30 miles) OR

Follow Route 66 northeast to Highway 89 (note: Route 66 will turn into Highway 89). Take Highway 89 north for approximately 65 miles, turn left (west) onto Highway 64. Take Highway 64 directly to the East Entrance on the South Rim - known as Desert View (approximately 50 miles).

Follow Highway 64 directly to the South Rim, approximately 60 miles.

Grand Canyon Railway, 800/834-8724, provides daily train service from Williams.

Van service may be available from both Flagstaff and Williams. Check with one of the Chambers of Commerce listed below for current information.

If you are staying in Tusayan, immediately south of the national park, take advantage of local transportation options. Check at your hotel’s front desk for current information.

South Rim Developed Area

Grand Canyon South Rim MapParking is available in lots throughout Grand Canyon Village. Avoid parking along the roadside except where signage or lines on the roadway indicate that it is permissible. The largest lots are at Park Headquarters (Lot A), Market Plaza (Lot B), and the Backcountry Information Center (Lot E), which also features pull-through spaces for RVs.

Tips to make your visit more enjoyable

 • Reservations for lodging within the park can be made by contacting Xanterra Parks and Resorts 303/297-2757 or toll-free 888/297-2757. Same day reservations can be arranged at 928/638-2631. Lodging is also available outside the park in Tusayan, Williams, and Flagstaff.

  • Lines form at the entrance station during busier times of the year. To get through the lines more quickly plan on arriving before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

  • Read The Guide, the park’s newspaper. You will be given a copy of The Guide at the entrance station. It features maps and information on parking areas, shuttle bus routes, ranger programs and other activities, lodging, guided tours, and more.

   • The best bargain in the park? The FREE shuttle bus system. It goes to all areas of interest, runs from before sunrise to after sunset, comes by frequently, and the drivers never get lost. Park your vehicle and ride the free shuttle.

   • Take the shuttle to the Visitor Center at Canyon View Information Plaza. Rangers and displays will help you plan your visit. The Visitor Center is not reachable by private vehicle.

Entrance Fees

The National Park Service collects a $25 per vehicle entrance fee that is good for seven days on both the South and North Rims. A $12 fee applies to bicyclists or those on foot.

Other passes available include:

Interagency Pass $80 Good at all NPS and many other federal recreation areas

Senior Pass $10 Lifetime pass for U.S. citizens 62 or older

Access Pass Free Citizens with a disability
